Wig 101: What to Look for
All Things Hair: What are wigs generally made out of? Jeanna Doyle: Synthetic wigs are typically made from acrylic, plastic, or polyvinyl which can break down in time, from heat, cold, or excessive rubbing, like the friction of a wig brushing against clothing. A synthetic wig with everyday wear can last from 3-6 months with proper care. All Things Hair: Are wigs for all hair types? Jeanna Doyle: Yes, although some have different textures to match different hair DNA. Look for a good texture match to start. Tip: If you have naturally dark hair and want to be a blonde chose a wig with a rooted color at the base to add believability. This will resemble your natural hair color growing out at the crown. All Things Hair: What are some popular ways to wear wigs for Halloween? Jeanna Doyle: A teasing comb can help a wig look more disheveled for a scary costume. Use a moisture spray to tame your princess and fairytale looks. All Things Hair: How can people ensure that their wigs stay put all day? Jeanna Doyle: Wear a stocking cap under your wig, to keep your own hair under control. You can take two bobby pins on either side of your ears and tuck them through the wig into the stocking cap for added security. There are also wig grip head bands that can help with a secure fit. All Things Hair: How can you care for your wig when you’re not wearing it? Jeanna Doyle: Store the wig on a head stand (if you wish to keep the shape) or you can turn it inside out and store it away until next year. Take a large tooth comb and remove any tangles before storing. All Things Hair: What are some popular wig colors for Halloween? Jeanna Doyle: I love a good tinsel wig they come in a variety of colors, like sliver, hot pink hair, green, the list goes on. Tip: with a cheaper wig, you may want to buy two and wear one on top of the other for added coverage. Secure with a couple bobby pins and enjoy a safe and Happy Halloween!
