Tips for Removing Box Braids

1. Start from the middle of your hair.

To make your life a little easier, especially if you’re the only one removing your braids, start from the middle of your hair. Removing braids at the center of your head allows you to style your hair in an updo the next day covering up that middle section with the rest of your box braids. No one would ever know! When you’re ready, resume your take down process.

2. Have a moisturizing conditioner handy.

When you remove your extensions, your hair will most likely feel dry and brittle. The reason for this is, your hair has been covered long-term and not getting the daily moisture or treatment that it needs. Wash hair with a hair care system that chock full of moisturizing and conditioning benefits. We like Dove Nutritive Solutions Coconut & Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner. This formula works to add essential moisture to your hair, without feeling heavy or weighted down.

3. Comb with a wide-tooth comb.

Do yourself a favor, step away from the fine-tooth comb and leave the hair brush alone, just for this one occasion. When you take out your braids, gently detangle hair with a wide-tooth comb before washing. This will help prevent knots and tangles while you wash your hair. Detangle hair from the ends and work your way up to your roots.

4. Opt for a clarifying shampoo.

If you’ve coated your hair with tons of product like, grease, oil, hairspray and gel while wearing your box braids long term, using a clarifying shampoo is the best way to start fresh. Wash hair with Dove Amplified Textures Hydrating Cleanse Shampoo to give your hair a super clean feeling.

5. Use a deep conditioner.

If you a) used a clarifying shampoo and/or b) notice your hair feels super dry, brittle, or damaged after wearing extensions, use a deep conditioner or hair mask to replenish and restore your hair. Try out SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque to add hydration! These quick tips are sure to keep your hair happy and healthy!
