Maintaining Red Highlights

1. Use high-quality, salon-grade dyes.

Everything with the fading process starts with the quality of the product you begin with. While we know it’s cheaper to go the box-color route, these dyes might not be of the same high quality than the ones offered in your salon. Or, you might also not be able to apply them correctly, resulting in a botched color job.

2. Wait before you wash.

In general, colorists recommend waiting between 24 to 48 hours before you wash your highlighted hair. Washing opens up the cuticles and your shampoo can be really harsh on newly dyed hair, causing the color to strip out and fade. If you’re feeling greasy, use a dry shampoo like Bed Head by TIGI Oh Bee Hive! Dry Shampoo to cleanse and revive your hair, as needed.

3. Use color-treated shampoo and conditioner.

Your dyed locks are going to need some extra TLC after all the chemicals and stripping. Use a color-treated shampoo and conditioner like TRESemmé Color Revitalize Shampoo and the TRESemmé Color Revitalize Conditioner whose formulas can provide moisture to your hair and keep it healthy-looking. Formulated with Advanced Color Vibrancy technology, this shampoo and conditioner is designed to helps keep your color vibrant for up to 8 weeks.

4. Stay away from heat styling.

Not only is too much water damaging to your strands, so is heat. After you highlight your hair, stay away from heat styling. But if you do have to immediately blow-dry your locks, make sure that you use a heat protectant. We like the TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray, a formula that protects your strands from heat while also making it soft and smooth.

5. Cover up when you are in the sun.

There’s nothing that we love more than chilling in the sun. But too much sun exposure is awful for your highlighted hair, causing it to fade quicker. You don’t have to forgo the beach entirely, just remember to cover up with a fashionable sun hat.

6. Stay away from chlorine.

Another warm-weather favorite is time at the pool. Those with highlighted hair should stay away from chlorine, which has been known to make dyed hair look dull, dry and in some instances, turn it green! If you have to take a dip, be sure to cover your hair up with a swim cap or do a fashionable top knot and avoid dipping your head altogether.

7. Maintenance is key.

As with any dye, if you love the look, you have to maintain it and get regular highlights. In general, red highlights last around three months but can look dull and fade much sooner than that. Consult with your colorist to find the optimal time for you. Red highlights are a gorgeous way to showcase your personality and tap into a modern trend. We hope these tips help you learn how to maintain this look with ease. Which tips are you going to use to maintain your look?
