Learn How To Curl Your Short Hair With a Straightener

Read on to learn more about how to curl short hair with a straightener.

1. Choose Your Tool

When you’re going to curl short hair with a flat straightener, or any tool for that matter, size will be the most important factor. You’ll want your flat iron to be high quality with ceramic plates, too. Try to find one that is between half an inch to one inch. If you have short hair, like a pixie cut, stick to the half-inch size. If your hair is any longer than your ears, you can go for the one inch.

2. Prep Your Hair

Even though short hair tends to be less damaged (all those regular trims!) you still need to protect your hair. Especially if you choose to heat style your hair several days a week. Fending off heat damage is as simple as spritzing in a heat protection spray. For smooth, protected hair, mist an even layer of the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Spray all over your hair and then brush through to distribute evenly. Make sure to wait until the spray has dried before using your flat iron.

3. Section Your Hair

Even on short hair it is super helpful to section off your hair. You may need to get alligator hair clips to hold your short hair sections. They can catch little hairs better than ponytails, and won’t leave dents. You will probably only need to section off into two layers, the top and bottom halves of your hair.

4. Twist Your Hair

Starting with the bottom half of your hair first, it’s time to start curling! Usually, the bottom half of your hair will be pretty short, so do your best to add in bends, so it will mesh with the longer top half. Take one inch or so sections of hair, clamp between the flat iron and twist as you pull down the section of hair.

5. Keep Curling

When you’ve finished the bottom section, release the top half of your hair. Find your part first, so you can figure out which way your curls will lie. Then, repeat the curling steps! Just keep on curling short hair, and be extra careful with how you curl the top half of your hair, as it will be much more visible than the bottom half.

6. Shake and Style

Once you’ve curled your whole head of hair, it’s time to shake it out! Ruffle up your curls and separate with your fingers for a fun, beachy curled look. Style your hair however you like from here, wear it down, add a fun clip or try a headband! When your look is complete, set your style with the Dove Style+Care Strength and Shine Flexible Hold Hairspray. Are you thinking about trying out this curling technique?
